The issue I selected, the Iranian Nuclear Program is quite relevant to everyones life these days. First of what we need to know is that for the past few years Iran has been slowly setting up and building facilities to house some sort of nuclear capability. The Iranian government has time and time again claimed that it is strictly for the purpose of energy, seeing as Iran has no enrichment facility to turn the uranium into a potential warhead (this has recently changed with the discovery of a hidden enrichment facility). Iran would be importing the enriched uranium from Russia and receives strong support from them as well on the matter.
What is concerning about this is multi-faceted. First of all, Iran’s President Ahmaddinejad, has widely denounced Israel and is a strong opponent to its very existence. With the power of a nuclear weapon Iran would be able to publicly strike against Israel and potentially destroy the entire nation, which would create chaos and trigger a massive war in the Middle East. This has become a very real reality now due to the fact that Iran has tested its short range missiles successfully, and although they are not able to carry a nuclear warhead, it is only a matter of time before Iran does develop this sort of capability. Secondly there is the threat that Iran could supply nuclear arms to terrorists like Al Qaeda in the region which would create a global threat and result that would be almost 5 times as the 9/11 attacks on NYC. The main reasons why this is concerning are these there are also the concerns about the instability of the Iranian government and Russian supply of the uranium. However the security threats remain a priority.
What the impact this has on humanity is that if this threat become a reality than we can look forward to something of a domino effect, in which if one “nuclear nation” like Iran goes and strikes, then Pakistan, North Korea, and others could potentially strike someone as well. This would cause a massive global chaos. Although this problem remains relatively confined to the Middle East is is important for people to keep an eye on the growing issue, since it affects you no matter where you’re at.
